Transitioning to v6.x.x from v5.x.x Hub: A unified system folder

In previous versions, EasyMorph Hub kept its data in two places at once. Some data (your spaces, tasks, Explorer) lived in the 'system folder' you could configure, while the rest - server settings, the encrypted credentials vault, the internal journal, drive mappings etc - was always stored in 'C:\ProgramData\EasyMorph Server', regardless of your configuration.

Starting with this version, EasyMorph Hub stores everything in a single, unified system folder. This makes the Hub easier to back up, easier to move to another drive, and removes a long-standing source of confusion.

The location of the system folder is now determined by a single machine-wide setting and can be viewed and changed at any time on the new 'System folder' tab in EasyMorph Hub Monitor.

Do I need to do anything?

If you used the default location ('C:\ProgramData\EasyMorph Server') - no action is required. The installer keeps using the same location, and everything continues to work as before.

If you previously configured a custom system folder - please read the migration steps below before updating. Because your data was split between your custom folder and 'C:\ProgramData\EasyMorph Server', you will need to bring it together into one location after updating.

This is a one-time, but manual step.

There is a safeguard step in the installer - the installer tries to detect this situation automatically. If it finds data left behind in the old location, it creates a note named 'em-server-migration-notes.txt' on the Windows desktop and opens it - you'll see exactly what was found and where.

Migration steps for customers with a pre-existing custom/non-default system folder

! Make a backup copy of your entire EasyMorph Server data folder(s) before you begin !

1. Decide on your unified location

Pick a single folder that will hold all Server data from now on - for the sake of this example, let's say it will be 'D:\EasyMorph Hub'. You can keep using your existing custom folder, or choose a new one.

2. Stop the EasyMorph Hub service

Open EasyMorph Hub Monitor and stop the service. The system folder can't be changed while the Server is running, and the files must be at rest before you copy them.

3. Bring all data into the unified folder

Copy the following items into your chosen folder, keeping the same subfolder layout. Some of these may currently be in 'C:\ProgramData\EasyMorph Server', and some in your custom folder - the goal is to have them all in one place:

  • The entire 'config' folder,
  • The 'servervault' file (no extension),
  • The 'journal.db' file,
  • The 'spacelessrepo' file, if present,
  • The 'Spaces' folder - all of your spaces, tasks, repositories, and Explorer data.
  • The 'Catalog' folder - if present,
  • The 'Other logs' folder, if present.

You don't need to copy the 'Uploads' or 'Quarantine' folders - the Server recreates them automatically.
Your license file is configured separately and not part of this move. You may re-upload your license after the move.

4. Point the Server at the unified folder

In EasyMorph Hub Monitor, open the 'System folder' tab, enter your chosen folder, and click Apply.

5. Check folder permissions

EasyMorph Hub runs under the 'EasyMorph Server' Windows group (that group was created long ago, by the EasyMorph Server installer). For the Server to work, this group needs full access to the resulting system folder.

  • Make sure the 'EasyMorph Server' group has full access to your system folder - including all subfolders and files.
  • For security, this group (together with the machine's administrators) should be the only one with access to the folder - please don't grant access to 'Everyone'.
  • But, one exception: the 'Other logs' subfolder must allow access to 'Everyone'. This is required for the Tableau/Hyper add-on, which writes its logs there under different accounts.

6. Start the service and verify

Start the EasyMorph Hub service and confirm that everything works.
