Error: The connection was closed by the remote host

Hello,

I have started to received this error when using my FTP connector.

I have queried it with our CRM provider, Blackbaud, and they have said:

image

Please can you help?

It looks like an SSL/TLS error. Make sure to untick the checkboxes in the security settings (see screenshot below) - this will force EasyMorph to use TLS 1.2 or 1.3.

If you use EasyMorph Server, there is a similar setting in Server settings.

My settings are already identical to yours.

No boxes ticked.

and

If you change the "Self-signed or invalid SSL certificate" setting (in the same dialog) to "Permit all", does it make the error go?

Hi.

No, it doesn't.

Thanks

The problem doesn't appear to be related to EasyMorph. The "Permit all" setting disables all SSL certificate checks and allows even expired or invalid certificates. BTW, the SSL certificate is installed on the SFTP server's side, not on EasyMorph's.

Contact your system administrators and make sure that there are no network connectivity problems between your computer and the SFTP server, e.g., the port configured in your SFTP connector settings is open in your organization's firewall. Also, ask Blackbaud to confirm once again the connection URL and port.

You can also try another SFTP app (e.g., WinSCP) to connect to Blackbaud as a test. If my hypothesis is correct, then it won't work, either.

Hi,

I've just launched WinSCP and I have been able to successfully fetch my data sets.

I'm positive that the Blackbaud host settings are valid because I have used an existing connection which just needed ta fresh password.

I have been fetching data from the Blackbaud FTP and our data warehouse, with an Easymorph connector, seamlessly, multiple times, daily, for over six months.

I usually have no problems whatsoever. This is the first time.

Any other suggestions are much appreciated. I am really keen for a resolution because EasyMorph is at the centre of EVERYTHING I do, daily.

Thanks

Hi @nbegbaaji,

Were there any changes in your working environment before that error appeared? Have you updated EasyMorph or Windows?

Please share the host and the port you are connecting to with us. You can send them to our support email. We may be able to replicate that error without the correct credentials.

Hello Andrew,

I have been working from home, in the same environment, for the last 2 weeks,

No updates have been applied to my laptop, by my organisation, but there have been a number of Windows driver updates:

Additionally 25 Definition updates (Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus) since November 1st

Did I add that the connector does fetch eventually upon repeated re-runs?

Blackbaud FTP settings:

host: s22arnx01sftp.nxt.blackbaud.com
port: 22

I get this message, intermittently, when testing my connector:

Thanks

Hello @nbegbaaji,

Please try to connect with WinSCP several times. Will all the attempts be successful?

I'm experiencing the same behavior with EasyMorph, WinSCP, and Putty when connecting to your server - sometimes I get a connection error, and sometimes an access denied error.

Also, who is managing that server? Why does Blackbaud support say that updating an SSL certificate is beyond the scope of their support?

Hi @andrew.rybka.
Answers to your questions:

WinSCP

I am currently successfully connected via WInSCP. In fact, I have WinSCP open, with a live connection, all day and have been using this as my workaround to access the Blackbaud FTP files, since this issue has started.

Testing outcome

I just carried out a series of disconnect and reconnects and after the fifth reconnect, I was presented with this message:

The message persisted for a while (for about 2-3 minutes), during which time I was unable to log in. :weary:

I was about to sulk off to bed, BUT I now have a successful connection again (about 5 minutes later).

Server hosting

Our CRM is fully-hosted by Blackbaud so they manage all the file servers.

Blackbaud are always quick to shirk responsibility for technical issues, whenever a non-partnered third party product is part of the equation. I had a similar issue with them when issues developed with Mozilla a year ago.

I hope that this helps.

Hi @nbegbaaji,

Thank you for the details. I'm intermittently getting the same error in WinSCP, so we can assume it's not an EasyMorph-related error.

I suggest you ask Blackbaud support to elaborate on the phrase "the process of updating the SSL certificate may not have been completed correctly." They should explain which SSL certificate they are referring to and, if they are referring to a certificate on your Blackbaud server, why they think it's your responsibility to fix it.

Hi @andrew.rybka

Thank you for your response.

I've pushed it back to Blackbaud, posing the questions you listed below.

Spoke to our IT Manager again. He said it sounds like a Blackbaud problem.

Will let you know the outcome.

Hi @andrew.rybka,

Blackbaud has provided me with this kb document to explain the error:

https://kb.blackbaud.com/knowledgebase/Article/73893

I hope that this is useful.

Hi Nike,

That article mentions Blackbaud NetCommunity. Are you using that product and trying to download a file, that is related to that product?

No, we don't use Blackbaud Net Community. It was an ancient email plug-in tool.

I've pinged BB, reminded them that we don't use BBNC, and to ask them to clarify that I have been sent the correct document.
